DIY: Dedicated Ice in a Year

News Updated: 6-22-11

So far this summer we have made great progress toward our new dedicated ice facility. We have a viable prospect building in Hillsboro that meets all of our criteria for cost, size, configuration, parking, zoning, electrical, accessibility, etc. HillsboroPhotoThe landlord would like to enter into a lease agreement with us as soon as we are ready to commit.

Our Building Committee has inspected the building in detail and has met with the Hillsboro planning board to discuss our use of the building. The Building Committee has drawn a preliminary floor plan and is now busy preparing a detailed cost estimate for construction of a basic curling rink within the building.

granite%20ice%20kingSteve Liske and Peren Bjork travelled to Granite Curling Club in Seattle where they purchased and picked up Granite's Ice King ice scraper. Granite purchased this Ice King new in 1997 to help get ready to host the USCA National Men's Championships. It has been maintained well and should serve us well for several years as we learn to make and prepare ice in our new facility.

Meanwhile our Fundraising Committee has had great success with the Big Dipper Bonspiel and the fundraising letter campaign. We have increased our collected and pledged amounts to a total of $175,000.

More, much more, still lies ahead of us. We are now applying for grants and loans. We need ECC members to send in their pledged donations and loans as soon as possible. We need all members to donate or loan whatever they can to help reach the $300,000 goal. Soon we will start a campaign to encourage our non-curling friends to donate to the cause. With everybody's help we will reach our goal of opening the first dedicated ice curling rink on the U.S. west coast since 1961.
