Fundraiser for Cathy Cummins

At the Paralympic trials this year, Cathy won the spot as the 1st women’s alternate on the USA Paralympics Curling Team for Sochi Russia.

CathyportraitCathy Cummins has been curling with ECC since participating in an Oregon Disability Sports open house in 2009.

Thanksgiving weekend Cathy played the first game in the Cathy Kerr International Bonspiel in Ottawa, Canada with Team USA. She then completed the 'spiel with the Can-Am team to finish in 8th place out of 18 teams. Top teams were Team Canada, Scotland, and Slovakia. Korea and Team USA were knocked out in "A" event semi-finals. Following the bonspiel, team USA had a curling camp and then the US Open in Utica, New York. The trip involved just over 2 weeks of travel and as you can imagine was very costly.

To reach Olympic level status, Cathy has incurred yearly training, equipment, traveling and competition costs totaling well over five thousand dollars. Alternate player expenses are not covered by the USOC, so with this fundraiser, we are hoping to help her with the personal expenses.

Wheelchair curling differs in several ways. There is no sweeping and because the wheels slip on the ice, teammates stabilize chairs for each other during shooting. The rock is delivered from just behind the hog line using a stick, called a cue. Delivery from a seated position is very challenging and top level wheelchair curlers average about 50% of their shots. At an Olympic level, wheelchair curlers average 70-80% accuracy. The video is in slow motion.

"The pursuit of my dream to be on the Olympic/Paralympic team is exciting and has been very expensive. As an alternate, none of my expenses are covered."

Cathy has ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and has managed to stay relatively strong over the past 8 years with this fatal, neurological disease by conserving energy and enjoying life to it's fullest.

"I appreciate ECC's support for wheelchair curling. I would have never been able to become a member of the USA Paralympic Curling Team without support of the club."

In an attempt to assist with training, travel and competition costs, ECC has set up a PayPal connection here to encourage donations to Cathy's expense fund.
