Corporate Events
and
Ice Rental

The Evergreen Curling Club (ECC) is available to host your group for a fun-filled curling session. Whether it is for a corporate function, birthday party (kids must be at least 12 years of age) or just a group outing, ECC can accommodate you.

Curling is a fun sport that appeals to a wide range of people. Strategy, leadership, communication, sportsmanship, socialization and competition are a few aspects of curling that make it a great event for corporate team-building exercises, social events, or just about anyone who is interested in having fun!

The cost of the ice rental includes all the equipment you will need, including stones, brooms, sliders and grippers. Each session lasts about two hours, with an off-ice introduction followed by on-ice instruction and participation. Please note, group size is limited to approximately 40 curlers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Group Event?

A group of people who are interested in curling and learning to curl come to the Lloyd Center and the Evergreen Curling Club provides instruction and all equipment for the event.

What times and dates are available for Group Events?

Fridays, 10:00 AM-12 noon. This is the only time available, and it must be scheduled well in advance with the Group Manager. Dates available for your request are marked in the calendar below...

Of course, some other organization may have already scheduled a group event on one of these dates. It is best to plan well ahead.

How many people can be in a group?

Anywhere from 20 to 40 people.

What if my group is smaller than 20?

Contact to see if there is another group within your company or organization that has also inquired about learning to curl. If there is, maybe we can put you together.

What if I only have a group of 10 people?

Alternatively, a group of 10 or fewer could book an "open sheet" if one is available during the normal league times Sunday or Tuesday evenings. This type of event must be reserved in advance on a per person basis and lasts about 2 hours. Go to our open house web page for more details.

What if my group is larger than 40?

Break your group into sub-groups, and organize two Group Events. The ideal group would have 32 participants.

Why is the limit 40? Couldn't we bring 50?

The ideal group size is 32 participants. This gives each person the most time for instruction and for throwing stones. The bigger the group, the less time everyone has learning to curl and actually play. We cannot accommodate groups larger than 40.

Do we need ice skates?

No. Curling does not involve ice skates. Curlers wear flat non-slippry rubber soled shoes, such as sneakers.

How much does a Group Event cost?

$900.00 which includes instruction and all of the equipment needed to play.

How much time do we get for a Group Event?

The total time is two hours.
About 30 minutes of this is off-ice instruction

  • How to be safe on the ice
  • What curling is all about
  • How a game is played.

On-ice instruction is in small groups of four or five individuals

  • How to throw a curling stone
  • How to sweep the ice
  • How to read curling signals.

After instruction you'll play a mini-game.

Can we have the Group Event at some other ice rink?

Not in the Portland/Vancouver area. The nearest facility that has curling ice, rocks, brooms, grippers and certified instructors is in Seattle.

Can we rent the stones and other equipment and take them to another rink?

No.

Should we schedule our Group Event with the Lloyd Center Ice Rink?

No.
All scheduling is done through the Evergreen Curling Club. ECC coordinates the schedule with the Lloyd Center and provides qualified instructors from its members.

If we have experienced curlers in our group, can we use them instead of the ECC instructors?

Experienced curlers from your group are always welcome to assist the ECC instructors.

What should we bring?

Wear loose fitting clothing so you can move comfortably -- like Polyester slacks, a polo or long sleeved T-shirt.

Do not wear heavy clothing; the Lloyd Center Ice Rink is not cold. Only the ice itself it cold, and you will get some exercise sweeping the ice. Wear flat shoes, such as sneakers. Do not wear thin-soled or leather soled shoes, such as women's “flats,” or men's dress oxfords, as your feet will get cold and the leather is too slippery!

What equipment does the ECC provide?

Everything you need besides yourself: Curling sheets with houses, stones, brooms, grippers, hacks (you'll find out what a hack is when you learn to curl). And, Instructors!

We have some people in our group who are physically handicapped. Can they participate?

As long as a person can stand or walk on the ice or use a wheel chair, they can push a rock down the ice with a Delivery Stick.

We have wheelchair curlers in our club that use the Delivery Stick to propel the rock down the ice!

How young can the people be in our group?

Below age 10, it may be difficult for a child to slide or push the stone all the way down (about 120 feet) the sheet of ice .

How much do the stones weigh?

smileyRock 42 pounds of solid granite, but you don't have to (and shouldn't) pick them up or try to catch them.

Will it be fun?

No one has ever told us that it was not fun or was a waste of time to learn to curl.
